Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness': What Can HR Learn From The Movie?
The latest chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has hit cinemas across the globe. ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ follows the sorcerer Doctor Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) as he protects multiverse traveller America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) from the horrors of the multiverse. The horrors are being orchestrated by none other than Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), who was previously an ally of Doctor Strange and the Avengers.
But what does a fictional sorcerer have to do with HR? We’ve compiled a list of the key takeaways HR departments can take away from ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.
After Wanda lost her love interest, Vision, in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, she held an entire town hostage to create a fictional reality where she could live out her days with her children and Vision. After that, she finds an ancient, cursed, book and evolves into the evil Scarlet Witch, who becomes the antagonist in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.
Now it is pretty unlikely that your employees will go on to do something like that. However, if Wanda had been supported by her team (The Avengers) from the start, maybe she would have developed more healthy ways of coping.
From a HR perspective, you never know what someone is going through, so simply asking if someone is okay and opening a line of communication is a great way to support your colleagues who might be experiencing difficulties. This is important to employee's mental wellbeing and limits feelings of isolation and loneliness during difficult times.
Wanda tries to solve all her problems by learning witchcraft in an evil book. Sometimes, you can’t fix problems on your own, and it is okay to ask for help to solve them. Asking for help is essential and might give you a new perspective on an issue that you have not considered.
In ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, Stephen Strange exhausts all options to stop the Scarlet Witch. Eventually, he possesses a dead version of himself to fight Wanda as sort of a zombie.
You may be thinking that there is no possible way a sentence like that can relate to HR; well you’re wrong. When troubles arise, use all available resources, even ones you might think are a ‘dead’ end. There are endless free resources out there, from fellow HR employees on Linkedin to detailed studies listed on Google Scholar.
During the film’s final battle, Doctor Strange realises the only person who can defeat Wanda is America Chavez. America is a teenager who has dealt with a lot of trauma, and she is unable to control her superpowers. However, after Doctor Strange gives America the support she needs and tells her that she has the strength within her to fight, the team wins their battle.
Sometimes, all employees need to know that people believe in them in the workplace. Everyone has insecurities; acknowledging and understanding them is vital to staff wellbeing and morale.
For their hard work Doctor Strange and America Chavez got the reward of saving their universe (for now). This type of reward will motivate the characters to continue their hard work.
While the fate of the universe might not be in your hands, you can appreciate your staff in much simpler ways. A great rewards and recognition scheme shows employees that their hard work and dedication do not go unnoticed.
