Workplace Wellness & how to promote it
Our health and workplace wellness is important, but most of the time it is overshadowed by the importance of our work life. Wellness is no separate entity- it’s an aggregate of our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health; we must ensure that we take the necessary steps to ensure we stay fit and healthy at work.
Why not walk to work instead of driving or taking public transport? Scientists state that physical activity can cause chemical changes in the brain, such as the release of endorphins, which can positively change your mood and increase wellness. This will have a positive impact on your mental health and self-esteem, boosting your energy levels. Employees who live too far away from work to walk can also benefit from spending less time sitting down in the office. Instead of sending an email to your colleague, why not walk over to them and have a face to face conversation? Why not set up a walking club with your colleague, and go on your lunch break? Not only will this improve your personal health and wellness, but also your social skills.
It’s easy to be consumed with the stresses of work, but this is not good for your health and wellness. Clearing the immediate stress from your mind can be as easy as taking 10 deep breaths at your desk, or whilst walking from your car to your work station. This is a form of meditation which will clear your mind, and also ensure that plenty of oxygen is reaching your lungs and bloodstream. Taking time to care for yourself will not only benefit your wellness but also your colleagues’. Practicing self-care and personal wellness seriously sets a great example for the rest of the team!
Dehydration causes weakness and fatigue, which is not going to get you through a long day at work! Drinking water regularly throughout the day is good for your wellness, and will ensure you feel fresh and energized for improved productivity. Keeping hydrated will allow you to continue to perform at your optimum; your stress levels will be kept within a healthy range. Moreover drinking plenty of water will ensure your mood is great for work effectiveness and good relations with co-workers.
Remember: drinking enough water promotes mental, emotional and physical wellness.
Leave work at work, and try not to bring it home! You need to recharge your batteries and take some time to work on your own health and wellness. Spending time with friends and family, and forgetting about the pressure of work will decrease your stress levels. You will realize that you have a purpose, not only to get your job done but be you and love your life!
